Al-Isra 17:84

قُلْ كُلٌّ يَعْمَلُ عَلَىٰ شَاكِلَتِهِۦ فَرَبُّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ هُوَ أَهْدَىٰ سَبِيلًا

“Say, "Each works according to his manner, but your Lord is most knowing of who is best guided in way."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Everyone acts in the shape of what they have become; only your Lord knows whose road truly leads home.

A reflection

Only He keeps the ranking

The ayah ends by taking something out of our hands. Fa-rabbukum aʿlamu bi-man huwa ahdā sabīlā: your Lord knows best who is more rightly guided on the way. Not you. Not me. Not the loudest voice in the room.

One commentary hears a warning in it, like the line elsewhere: work according to your position, and we are working (11:121). Each will be repaid for his work, it says, for nothing is hidden from Him.

That is hard for the ego to accept. We like to keep a ranking. Picture a man at Friday prayer who, without ever saying it aloud, sorts the front row. That one's beard is too short. That one came late last week. That one has a son who does not pray. By the time the imam says the opening takbir, he has quietly placed himself near the top of a table only he can see.

The ayah overturns the table. The knowledge of who is truly best guided belongs to the One who sees the heart. He sees the intention, the private night, the struggle nobody else knows about. Our rankings are drawn from beards and arrival times. His is drawn from everything.

A sceptic may ask whether 'your Lord knows best' is itself a kind of boast. Why would God need to announce His superior knowledge? He gains nothing from saying it. He is free of all need (35:15). The statement is a mercy to us. It lifts an impossible job off our shoulders. Nobody is asked to judge the hearts of a whole congregation. Nobody is able to.

There is relief in that, and humility. The man in the front row can stop scoring and start praying. His own road is the only one he will be asked about, and even of that, his Lord knows more than he does.

The comparative matters too. Ahdā: more guided. Some roads really are better than others. Allah simply keeps the scores Himself.
