Al-Baqarah 2:118

“Those who do not know say, "Why does Allāh not speak to us or there come to us a sign?" Thus spoke those before them like their words. Their hearts resemble each other. We have shown clearly the signs to a people who are certain [in faith].”

Essence

The demand that Allah speak directly or send a special sign is an old one; His signs are already clear to anyone seeking certainty.

A reflection

Why doesn't God just say so?

A university student, half joking, says to his Muslim flatmate: 'If God wanted me to believe, He could write it across the sky tonight. Then I would.' His flatmate does not laugh it off. It is a fair question, and he wants to answer it properly.

The ayah records the same demand. 'Why does Allah not speak to us, or a sign come to us?' The commentators differ on who said it. Some name the idolaters of Makka, which most of them prefer. Others name a man from Madina's Jewish community, or the Christians. But the question itself has no single owner.

It is worth being honest first. The Quran does not condemn asking for evidence. A few ayat earlier, it demanded evidence itself: 'Bring your proof' (2:111). What the ayah questions is something else: refusing evidence already given, and insisting that God prove Himself in the form we choose.

A classical theologian gives three reasons why such demands are not simply granted. First, one sufficient proof already makes the truth reachable. Whoever wants the truth will take it. Whoever keeps asking for more after that shows the request was never about evidence. The Quran asks: 'Is it not enough for them that We sent down to you the Book?' (29:51). Second, Allah knows whether a new wonder would change anything. Third, if wonders came on demand, they would stop being wonders. The extraordinary would become ordinary, and belief would no longer be a free choice.

The flatmate did not win the argument that night. But he gave his friend something better than writing in the sky. He gave him a Book to read, and an invitation to read it as honestly as he questioned God.
