Al-Baqarah 2:135

“They say, "Be Jews or Christians [so] you will be guided." Say, "Rather, [we follow] the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists."[47]”

Essence

To the claim that guidance comes by joining a camp, the answer is the way of Ibrāhīm: turned wholly to Allah, and never one who associated partners with Him.

A reflection

Guidance is not a membership card

At a university freshers' fair, three faith societies have stalls in a row. Each banner promises, in its own way, the same thing: join us, and you will have the answer.

The ayah records an older version. 'Be Jews or Christians, and you will be guided.' A narration-based commentary describes the setting. Each group argued that its own prophet was the greatest, its own book the best, its own religion the only one. Each told the believers: join us; there is no religion but ours.

Notice what the Quran does not reply. It does not say, 'No, join our camp instead.' It says: 'Rather, the way of Ibrāhīm, turning wholly to Allah.' It goes back behind all the labels to the man they all claimed. Elsewhere it says it plainly: Ibrāhīm was neither a Jew nor a Christian (3:67).

A modern commentary renders the reply with a striking word. Guidance is that we all follow the religion of Ibrāhīm. It is an invitation to a shared root, not a contest of banners.

This cuts both ways, and a fair reading must say so. A rhetorician among the commentators notes that the closing words, 'he was not of those who associate partners', are aimed at everyone who claimed Ibrāhīm while associating partners with Allah. A Muslim who treats the name 'Muslim' as a ticket, while his heart leans on other things, is answered by the same ayah.

Guidance in the Quran is never a club you join. It is a direction you turn. The name on the banner matters less than which way the heart is facing.
