Al-Baqarah 2:150

“And from wherever you go out [for prayer], turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Ḥarām. And wherever you [believers] may be, turn your faces toward it in order that the people will not have any argument against you, except for those of them who commit wrong; so fear them not but fear Me. And [it is] so I may complete My favor upon you and that you may be guided,”

Essence

Face the Sacred Mosque from everywhere, so that no fair argument stands against you; fear not the wrongdoers but Allah, who completes His favour and guides.

A reflection

Fear that frees

The night before his father's funeral, a man rewrites the eulogy three times. Each version is softer, to avoid upsetting a difficult uncle who will be sitting in the front row. At two in the morning he stops. He remembers whose presence he will really be speaking in. He goes back to the first version, the true one.

'Do not fear them; fear Me.' After the change of qibla, the critics had plenty to say. The ayah does not tell the believers to win every exchange. It moves their fear to its proper place. A narration-based commentary explains: do not fear the arguments of stubborn wrongdoers; give your fear to Me alone, for I am the One worthy of it. A later commentary adds the reason. They have no power to benefit you or to harm you. I have power over all things.

The word is khashya. The lexicons give it no older physical picture; from the start it means fear. But it is a particular kind: fear mixed with reverence, which grows from knowing the One you fear.

That is what humbles the ego. So much of our behaviour is shaped by fear of people: their mockery, their opinions, the look on a relative's face. The ayah asks a simple question. Whose judgement actually decides your life? Fear of the Greatest makes every lesser fear smaller.

Does Allah need to be feared? No; He is free of all need (35:15). Our awe adds nothing to Him. It frees us from being ruled by everyone else.

The man read the true eulogy. His uncle frowned. Nothing else happened.
