Al-Baqarah 2:192

فَإِنِ ٱنتَهَوْا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

“And if they cease, then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.”

Essence

Even mid-war, Allah's door stays open: if they stop, He is Forgiving, Merciful, and the fighting stops too.

A reflection

Forgiveness announced to the enemy

A man has not attended his cousin's family gatherings for twenty-six years. It began with a remark at an engagement party. He can still repeat it word for word.

Now read this ayah in its place. The verses around it speak of people who tortured believers, drove them from their homes and fought them. Then, mid-sentence, comes this: 'But if they stop, then Allah is Forgiving, Merciful'.

A classical commentator draws out how far that reaches. Even if they had killed Muslims inside Allah's own sanctuary, if they repent He forgives them. No sin is too great for Him to forgive the one who turns to Him. Another commentator reasoned from this that even a deliberate killer's repentance is accepted. Idolatry was the greater sin, he said, and Allah promised to accept repentance from it.

The Prophet ﷺ lived this at the conquest of Makkah. His announcement, as the commentators report it, was not about revenge. Whoever closes his door is safe. Whoever enters the Mosque is safe. Whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān, the enemy commander, is safe.

Set beside this our own grudges. We keep files on people who hurt our pride over a sentence. The One who owns everything, and was openly fought, keeps His door open to the fighters themselves. The ego that cannot forgive a cousin has nothing to be proud of before such a Lord.

Does He need their repentance? No. He is free of all need (35:15). Their return adds nothing to Him. He names Himself Forgiving and Merciful because it is true, and because they need to hear it.
