Al-Baqarah 2:195

“And spend in the way of Allāh and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allāh loves the doers of good.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Ruin is more often comfort, hoarding and despair than courage; so spend for Allah, do not hurl yourself into destruction, and do everything beautifully.

A reflection

The destruction that looks like staying safe

A man is asked to help sponsor a neighbour's orphaned grandson. He says he cannot take on that kind of risk just now. The same week he books his third holiday of the year.

'Do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction' is often quoted as a general warning against risk. The earliest correction of that reading came from a Companion.

An army of Muslims faced the Byzantines outside Constantinople. One man charged alone into the enemy line. People cried out that he had thrown himself into destruction. Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī stood up. You are reading this ayah wrongly, he said. It was revealed about us, the Anṣār. When Allah had made Islam strong, we said privately: let us stay with our wealth and repair what we neglected. Then this ayah came. The destruction was staying with our wealth and abandoning the cause. Sunan Abī Dāwūd records it, and al-Tirmidhī graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.

A Companion in Sahih al-Bukhari says simply that the ayah was revealed about spending. An early commentator called the destruction meanness. Another said: spend in Allah's way, even if all you have is an arrowhead.

The word for spending, infāq, pictures something going out of the hand. Its opposite, here, is the closed hand. The ayah links them: keep your hand closed, and the ruin you feared comes anyway, by another door.

This turns the usual instinct upside down. We think of danger as giving too much. The ayah warns that the greater danger is the settled, comfortable life that has stopped giving at all.
