Al-Baqarah 2:234

“And those who are taken in death among you and leave wives behind - they, [the wives, shall] wait four months and ten [days]. And when they have fulfilled their term, then there is no blame upon you for what they do with themselves in an acceptable manner.[92] And Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.”

Essence

A widow's grief is given a shape, honoured but not a prison; when it is complete, her life is hers to resume with dignity.

A reflection

Taken in full

Three weeks after a man's funeral, his gym sends a cheerful email. His annual plan renews on Monday, it says, and they look forward to seeing him. The machine does not know. It had his whole year planned.

The ayah opens with a word for death that carries a picture: yutawaffawna, they are 'taken in full'. One lexicon gives the root's image as a measure filled to the brim. A classical commentator explains that tawaffī is taking a thing complete. The one who dies has received his life in full, down to its last day. Nothing was cut short of its appointed measure.

That is majesty that quietly corrects the ego. We plan years ahead as though time were ours to hold. The ayah reminds us who holds the measure, and who takes it back when it is full.

The ayah ends with another name: 'Allah is fully aware of what you do'. Khabīr comes from a root of knowing what a thing is inside, as one knows a person after testing him. A concise commentary says: He knows its inner as He knows its outer.

That awareness covers the living. It covers how a family treats the widow, how the estate is handled, how her grief is respected or exploited. Nothing done to her in the months that follow is hidden.

Does He need us to know any of this? He is free of all need (35:15). We need to know it. Death takes the measure in full; what we do with the people left behind is fully seen.
