Al-Baqarah 2:238
حَـٰفِظُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلصَّلَوَٰتِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ٱلْوُسْطَىٰ وَقُومُوا۟ لِلَّهِ قَـٰنِتِينَ
“Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle [i.e., ʿaṣr] prayer and stand before Allāh, devoutly obedient.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Amid the laws of marriage and parting, Allah turns us to prayer: guard every prayer, especially the middle one, and stand before Him in stillness.
A reflection
A prayer in the middle of a divorce
A man is in the middle of a bitter separation. Between two calls with his solicitor, he steps into a hotel corridor and prays ʿAṣr on his coat. Afterwards he realises it was the only ten minutes all day in which he had not been fighting.
Look where this ayah sits. Before it: waiting periods, bridal gifts, guardians, nursing, widows. After it: provision for widows and divorced women. Right in the middle, without warning, comes: 'Guard the prayers'.
The commentators noticed the placement and offered reasons. One says: after all these worldly matters of marriage and divorce, Allah turns to the matters of the Hereafter. Another says it means: do not let your attachments and their disputes distract you from your Master. A third points to what came just before: forgo your due, do not forget graciousness. Prayer prepares the soul for those virtues. It joins reverence for Allah's command with compassion for His creation.
A classical theologian adds what prayer does inside a person. Its recitation, standing, bowing and prostration break the heart before Allah's awe. They remove the stubbornness from one's nature. They remind the servant of the majesty of his Lord and the lowliness of his own state. That is precisely what a quarrelling husband or wife most needs.
The ayah is not interrupting the family law. It is the key to keeping it. People who stand before Allah five times a day find it harder to grind each other down in between.
If your life is full of disputes right now, do not drop your prayers until things calm down. Guard them precisely now.
