Al-Baqarah 2:277

“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakāh will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.”

Essence

Amid the warning against ribā stands another way to live: faith, good deeds, upright prayer and zakāh, with a reward that cannot be lost.

A reflection

The only people who stand up straight

A man spends ten hours a day bent over a desk. His back has a permanent curve. Five times a day he stands for prayer, and those are the only moments his spine is truly straight.

Two ayat earlier, the Quran described those who consume ribā: 'they will not stand, lā yaqūmūn, except as one struck by madness'. Now, in contrast, it describes those who 'aqāmū the prayer'. The two verbs come from the same root, q-w-m: standing upright.

The lexicons say that establishing the prayer is named from straightening a bent stick, aqāma al-ʿūd. Prayer is how a bent life is set straight again. The ribā-eaters rise and stagger. The people of prayer stand.

This is not a coincidence of vocabulary. It is a portrait of two lives. One is built on taking, and cannot find its balance. The other is built on turning to Allah five times a day, and returns to upright again and again.

Allah needs none of this. He is free of all need (35:15). He did not create us to provide for Him (51:57). The prayer straightens us, not Him. 'In the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest' (13:28).

That speaks to something many people feel now. Life bends us. Work curves our backs and our priorities. We chase, we calculate, we stagger from one pressure to the next. Prayer is the daily appointment where the spine, and the soul, are pulled upright.

The man at the desk does not think of prayer as posture. But it may be the most important stretching he does all day.
