Taha 20:66

“He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Musa lets falsehood go first and spend everything it has; suddenly the ground seems to crawl, though not one rope has come alive.

A reflection

Let falsehood spend itself first

In a club chess match, a quiet older player faces a fierce young attacker. He does not rush his own plan. He lets the young man bring forward every piece, launch every threat, commit everything to the assault. Only when the attacker has nothing left in reserve does the older man make one calm move. The whole attack collapses.

The magicians offered Musa the first throw. He replied: bal alqū, no, you throw.

The commentators explain why. One says Musa let them go first to bring out everything they had. They would empty out their utmost effort and exhaust the furthest reach of their ability. Then, once they had done it, Allah would display His authority and hurl the truth at falsehood, so that it shattered it. That last phrase echoes another ayah: We hurl the truth against falsehood and it smashes it (21:18).

Another commentator gives a further reason. Musa had already shown his miracle once at court. If he went first now, he would in a sense provoke them into attempting to cancel it. If they chose to display their magic first, the miracle would come as the answer that removes the doubt. It would not be the trigger that causes it.

That is wise strategy in any contest of truth. You do not need to win the first exchange. You need the last one. Let the other side say everything. Let every argument, every display, every threat be laid out in full. Then the reply lands on a complete case and ends it.

This takes patience and confidence, which is exactly why it is rare. Most of us want to strike first.

Next time you are in a dispute and certain of your ground, try listening to the end. Let the other side finish. The truth is not weakened by waiting its turn.
