Taha 20:83

۞ وَمَآ أَعْجَلَكَ عَن قَوْمِكَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ

“[Allāh said], "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"”

Saheeh International

Essence

Musa raced ahead to meet his Lord and was met with a question: eagerness that leaves your people behind is not yet whole devotion.

A reflection

Where the leader walks

What made you hasten ahead of your people, O Musa? The commentaries agree on the setting. Allah had appointed a meeting at the side of the Mount. Musa set out with a company of his people, and then he pulled ahead of them, eager to reach his Lord.

A note printed with a rhetorical commentary draws out a lesson about leadership from this question. Allah, who knew the answer, asked it to teach Musa the manners of the march. The head of a people, the note says, should walk behind them. From there his gaze takes in the whole group, reaches every one of them, and keeps watch over them. From the front, he sees none of that. The same note points to Lut, who was told to walk behind his family as they left at night (15:65).

The note is careful to add that Musa overlooked this only out of eagerness for Allah's pleasure. Anyone promised something that delights him wishes he had the wings of a bird to reach it.

The principle is old and still true. Picture a volunteer leading a group of teenagers across open moorland in failing light. The strongest walkers want her at the front, setting the pace. She refuses. She walks last. From there she can see the girl whose boot is rubbing and the boy who has gone quiet. She can see the gap opening between the leaders and the rest. The front of a line can only see the path. The back can see the people.

Leaders are often rewarded for being out in front: first to the idea, first to the meeting, first to the summit. This ayah asks a quieter question. While you were hurrying ahead, who was watching your people?

What happened next answers it. In Musa's absence, the people were tested and led astray (20:85). The gap between leader and led became the space in which the calf was built.
