Al-Hajj 22:14

“Indeed, Allāh will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. Indeed, Allāh does what He intends.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah Himself admits believers who do good into gardens with rivers beneath; He does whatever He wills, and here He wills to give.

A reflection

Admitted, not paid

The verb is active, and Allah is its subject. Allah admits them. The believers do not stroll into the gardens on the strength of their record. They are brought in.

Then the ayah closes with a plain declaration: 'Allah does whatever He wills.' Placed here, that sentence is not a threat. It is the reason for the gift. He is under no obligation, and no one can stop Him. So when He wills to honour someone, nothing stands in the way.

This quietly dismantles a certain kind of pride. Religious people can come to feel owed. I prayed, I fasted, I gave, so the account should balance. The Prophet ﷺ cut that feeling at the root. He said that no one's deeds will bring him into Paradise. His Companions asked whether that included him. It included him too, he said, unless Allah covered him with His grace and mercy. Then he added: so aim for what is right, and come as close as you can. The hadith is in both Sahihs.

So deeds matter enormously, but they are not a price. They are the road on which the gift is received.

Picture a man arriving at a sold-out concert. He believes he bought his ticket. At the door he learns his card was never charged. His name was on the guest list all along, written there by the performer himself. He is still glad he queued in the rain. But the queue did not earn the seat.

That is how the ego shrinks in front of this ayah. Not by being told its efforts are worthless. By being told they were welcomed, and that the welcome was always His.
