Al-Hajj 22:26

“And [mention, O Muḥammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], "Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform ṭawāf[923] and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.”

Essence

Before a single stone was laid, Ibrahim was given the site, one line he must never cross, and the people the House was really for.

A reflection

Honour that flows from the name, not to it

A hospital porter has pushed trolleys for twenty years. Ask him what he does and he says, 'I'm at the children's hospital.' He stands a little taller when he says it. The work is ordinary. The name on the lanyard is not.

The ayah does something like this, on a scale that should humble us. Allah calls a building of plain stones in a barren valley baytī, 'My House'. One classical reflection says that everything Allah attributes to Himself gains a distinction above its kind. The House was already chosen. By being called His, it is clothed with an honour it did not have before. The same writer finds here the secret of why hearts are drawn to it across the world. He quotes a poet: 'When I was named as yours, I became great.'

Notice the direction of the honour. We spend our lives trying to put our names on things, so that their worth flows back to us. Here the worth flows the other way. The stones are not made great by the man who builds them. They are made great by the Name they are given.

And look at who is building. Ibrahim, the Friend of Allah, the father of the prophets. Yet the very first instruction, before any trowel, is 'do not associate anything with Me'. One commentator asks why a man who never worshipped idols needed telling. His answer: do not let any other aim into this building. Not reputation, not legacy, not your own name. If that was said to Ibrahim, our own good works need the same watch kept over them.

A sceptic may ask whether God needs a house, or wants a monument to Himself. The ayah answers in its own next words. The House is to be purified 'for those who circle, those who stand, and those who bow and prostrate'. It is His by honour and theirs by use. Allah is free of need of all the worlds (3:97). The building gives Him nothing. It gives the porter his lanyard.
