Al-Hajj · Madani · ayah 41 of 78

Al-Hajj 22:41

“[And they are] those who, if We give them authority in the land, establish prayer and give zakāh and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. And to Allāh belongs the outcome of [all] matters.”

Essence

Those Allah settles in the land show it first in prayer, giving, spreading good and stopping harm, for every outcome returns to Him.

A reflection

The seat was placed, and the ending was never yours

Look at who acts first in this ayah. Not the leaders. Makkannāhum: We established them. Power arrives as something done to them, not something they seized. And the ayah closes by taking back the one thing every powerful person most wants to own. Wa-lillāhi ʿāqibatu al-umūr: to Allah belongs the outcome of all matters.

So human power sits between two divine hands. At the start, He gives the place. At the end, He holds the result. Everything the leaders do happens in the middle. It is a short stretch between a gift they did not earn and an ending they cannot control.

Think of a football stadium renamed for its third sponsor in ten years. Each company paid for the letters on the roof and the name on the tickets. Each believed, for a few seasons, that the ground was theirs. The fans still call it by the old name, and the pitch has outlived every logo. Most ownership on earth is signage.

The ego dislikes this. Pride wants the story to begin with my talent and end with my legacy. The ayah allows neither. ʿĀqiba comes from the heel, ʿaqib: whatever walks behind a thing and arrives after it. The end of every matter walks at its heel, and that heel belongs to Allah. The commentaries read it as every affair returning to His judgement, where all other rule falls away, with no rival and no claimant.

Is that a need to have the last word? A ruler who insists on owning the ending is insecure, because he could lose it. Allah loses nothing whether we admit it or not (35:15). Telling us the outcome is His is not for His comfort. It is for ours. It frees the person in charge to make the honest decision without lying awake over how history will judge it.

So ask what you are holding as though it began with you. A position, a following, a household that runs on your word. It was placed in your hands, and its outcome is already spoken for.
