Al-Hajj 22:42

وَإِن يُكَذِّبُوكَ فَقَدْ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَعَادٌ وَثَمُودُ

“And if they deny you, [O Muḥammad] - so, before them, did the people of Noah and ʿAad and Thamūd deny [their prophets],”

Essence

If they call you a liar, you stand in old company: the people of Nuh, ʿĀd and Thamūd said the same before them.

A reflection

You are not the first to be called a liar

This ayah is a hand on a shoulder. The commentators agree on its purpose: consolation for the Prophet ﷺ in the face of being called a liar. One of them puts the whole message in a single line. You are not the only one.

There is a quiet detail in the grammar. The denial had already happened, again and again. Yet the ayah says 'if they deny you', in the present tense, as though it were still to come. One classical reading explains why. The aim is to soothe the grief that each fresh rejection would bring. The ayah meets the next wound before it arrives.

Being disbelieved is one of the loneliest experiences there is. You said something true and were treated as a fraud. The mind quickly turns on itself: perhaps I am the problem. The ayah answers with history. Look behind you. The line of the disbelieved is long, and it is made of the best people who ever lived.

An apprentice piano tuner is sent to the concert hall for the first time. Afterwards the hall manager rings his master to say the grand piano still sounds wrong. The master says nothing. He takes down a box of tuning logs from a shelf. Forty years of them, each signed by a different tuner. Half carry the same complaint from the same office. Still sounds wrong.

The boy laughs, and something in his chest unclenches. He has not become a better tuner in that moment. He has simply stopped being alone.

That is the first gift of this ayah. It does not deny the hurt. It surrounds the hurt with company. When a truth you have spoken is called a lie, remember who stands in the line ahead of you. Then return to the work.
