Essence
Hud tells the strongest people of his age to guard themselves with Allah and follow him, and the order of those words matters.
A reflection
Protection offered to a people of walls
Read this command beside what follows it. Two ayat later Hud names what his people were building. Towers on every height. Strongholds, as if they would live for ever. Fists that came down like a tyrant's. Every one of those is a kind of protection. A tower lets you see who is coming. A fortress keeps them out. A hard blow makes sure nobody tries again.
So when Hud says 'guard yourselves with Allah', he is not changing the subject. He is speaking their language. They were a people obsessed with safety, and he offers them the only safety that holds.
Picture a family who add a third lock to the front door, then a camera doorbell, then a reinforced room under the stairs. Each purchase is reasonable. Yet the fear grows with every lock, because each one admits there is something out there. One evening the father realises the thing he truly dreads is not a burglar. It is a phone call from a hospital, or the slow drift of his children's hearts. No lock reaches that.
ʿĀd lived in the most fertile land of its region, one classical commentary notes, between Oman and Hadramawt. It is sand dunes now. Their walls did not fail because they were badly built. They failed because the danger came from a direction walls do not face.
Taqwa answers that direction. It places something between you and the one harm you cannot outbuild: standing before Allah having ignored Him. It does not ask you to tear your walls down. It asks you to stop trusting them with a job they cannot do.
