Al-Baqarah 2:3

ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ

“Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer,[9] and spend out of what We[10] have provided for them,”

Saheeh International

Essence

The God-conscious trust what they cannot see, keep their prayer standing straight, and let part of what He gave them go out again.

A reflection

Who signed your pay?

At a business awards dinner, a man in a good suit takes the stage. He tells the room he started with nothing and built everything himself. There is loud applause. He does not mention the teacher who stayed late for him, or the health that let him work eighteen-hour days. Nor does he mention the rain that grew the wheat in the canapés.

This ayah quietly corrects that speech. The God-conscious spend 'from what We have provided them'. Two of the translations add a note on that 'We'. In Arabic, they explain, it conveys grandeur and power. And the verb is razaqa: to provide a ration, a sustenance that keeps arriving at its appointed time.

So before the ayah says anything about spending, it settles who owns the money. Your salary arrived through your work, but the work, the strength, the mind and the opportunity were all provided. The ego likes the phrase 'my money'. The ayah says 'what We provided'. Pride cannot survive long in that grammar.

And notice the small word min: 'from' what We provided. The believers are not asked to hand over everything. They let a portion go out, and keep the rest with a clear conscience. The Owner of all of it asks for part of it back, and even that part He returns with increase.

Someone may ask why God would describe Himself as the Provider in such grand terms. Does He need us to acknowledge Him? Why ask for money at all? He is free of all need; it is we who are in need of Him (35:15). He created people to worship Him, and He says plainly that He wants no provision from them (51:56–57). Nothing you give reaches Him as something He lacked. What reaches Him is your taqwā (22:37).

The 'We' of grandeur is for your sake. A person who knows who provides can give without fear of running out. The self-made man has to guard every penny, because in his story there is no one behind him. The servant who knows his Provider can open his hand.
