وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ ٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ
“And warn, [O Muḥammad], your closest kindred.”

Essence
The call begins at home: like a lookout who sees raiders, the Prophet runs first to his own people and calls them by name.
A reflection
The lookout who runs to his own tents first
When this ayah came down, the Prophet ﷺ explained what he was doing with a picture. Sahih Muslim preserves it from two Companions, Qabīṣa ibn al-Mukhāriq and Zuhayr ibn ʿAmr.
He went to a heap of rocks on the slope of a mountain. He climbed to the highest stone of it. Then he called out to the clan of ʿAbd Manāf: I am a warner. My likeness and yours is that of a man who saw the enemy. He set off to keep watch for his own people. Then he feared the enemy would reach them before he did. So he began to shout: yā ṣabāḥāh.
The lexicons explain that cry. Raiding horsemen liked to fall on a camp in the morning, and the day of a raid was called 'the day of the morning'. Whoever saw them first shouted 'O morning', so the whole camp woke at once. Nobody heard it as a lecture. It was the sound of someone who loved you, running.
Hold that picture, because the whole ayah lives inside it. A lookout on a high rock sees further than the people below. What he sees is not his to keep. And where does he run first? Not to strangers. He runs to the tents of his own family, because they are the ones he cannot bear to lose.
Notice too what the parable leaves out. The lookout does not stop to win an argument. He does not wait until his relatives are in the mood. His fear is not of them, but for them. He shouts because he is afraid he will be too late.
This is the shape of indhār, warning, in the Prophet's own telling. It is love moving at speed. It is honest about danger, and it begins with the people closest to the danger's path.
The question it leaves with us is uncomfortable. Have I seen anything from my own rock that my family has not? And if I have, why am I still walking?
