Al-An'am 6:19

“Say, "What thing is greatest in testimony?" Say, "Allāh is witness between me and you. And this Qur’ān was revealed to me that I may warn you thereby and whomever it reaches.[298] Do you [truly] testify that with Allāh there are other deities?" Say, "I will not testify [with you]." Say, "Indeed, He is but one God, and indeed, I am free of what you associate [with Him]."”

Essence

Asked for a witness, the Prophet names the One who saw everything, hands His Book to all it will reach, and signs for no rival.

A reflection

Two drivers, both certain the light was green

After a collision at a crossroads, two drivers stand on the pavement. Each is certain his light was green. Neither is lying. Both have replayed it a dozen times, and both memories feel like film. Then a cyclist's helmet camera turns up, and both are shown to be partly wrong.

Human testimony is precious, and fragile. We forget. We see what we expected to see. We fill gaps without noticing. Sometimes we lie. One early commentary lists exactly these as the weaknesses of every created witness: forgetfulness, mistake, confusion and falsehood. Then it explains why the answer in this ayah is the answer. None of those can enter His testimony.

The ayah opens with a question placed in the Prophet's ﷺ mouth: what thing is greatest in testimony? One report says the Makkan leaders had demanded a witness to his being a messenger. The reply does not produce a famous supporter. It names Allah.

There is something here for the ego. We crave witnesses. We want our side confirmed, our effort noticed, our version of events believed. Much of modern life is a search for testimony: reviews, references, likes, a crowd that agrees. The ayah lifts the head above all of it. The witness who matters most saw everything, and has never once misremembered.

Is it arrogant for God to call His own witness the greatest? Only if it were untrue. A recording is not proud of being more accurate than a memory. It simply is. And He gains nothing from our agreement (35:15). The statement is for our sake, so that we stop resting our worth on other people's shaky recollections.

The root of shahāda joins being present, knowing and declaring. He was present at every crossroads. Humility begins when I admit that my own certainty is a weaker witness than it feels.
