Ali 'Imran 3:6
“It is He who forms you in the wombs however He wills. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Your face, your height, your mind were settled in the dark before you had a name, by the Wise One who shapes as He wills.
A reflection
Two brothers, one house, no choice
Two brothers grow up in the same house, eat the same dinners, sleep in the same bunk beds. One reaches six foot two; the other stops at five foot seven. One has his grandfather's ear for music; the other cannot hold a tune. Neither chose any of it.
Huwa alladhī yuṣawwirukum fī al-arḥāmi kayfa yashāʾ: He is the One who shapes you in the wombs however He wills. The commentaries list what 'however He wills' covers. Male or female. Fair or dark. Tall or short. Beautiful or plain. Sound in body or with a defect. And, they add, the deeper fortunes of a life.
The word ṣūra, form, names the shape that marks each creature out, so that no two are alike. One classical derivation ties it to inclining: the form leans towards a likeness and takes it. Every face in a crowded station is a separate act of shaping.
Now look at what people are proud of. Height. A jawline. A quick mind. A resemblance to someone admired. All of it was settled in a dark place you cannot remember, before you had a name. Pride in your shape is like a letter taking pride in its own handwriting. The ego cannot claim what was done before it existed.
Why would God remind us that He shapes us? Not for credit; He is free of need of the worlds (29:6). It is for us. The proud need to hear that they made none of it. The ashamed need to hear exactly the same thing. The face you dislike in the mirror was not an accident. It was formed by Someone, however He willed, and the ayah closes on His names: the Mighty, the Wise.
Tomorrow morning, look at the face in the mirror and say, before any judgement: He made this.
