Ar-Rum 30:21

“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.”

Essence

Two people of one kind find stillness in each other, and between them He places an affection and a mercy that no blood tie explains.

A reflection

Two verbs, and neither of them is yours

At a silver wedding anniversary, the husband stands to give a speech. He explains the formula. Communication. Compromise. Choosing well at the start. Never going to bed angry. The guests nod, and some take mental notes. It is a kind speech, and almost every sentence begins with "we".

Now read the ayah slowly and count who does what. Khalaqa: He created, for you, from yourselves, spouses. Jaʿala: He placed, between you, affection and mercy. The couple are given one verb only, and it comes as a purpose: li-taskunū, so that you may find rest. The creating is His. The placing is His. The resting is the gift.

Look at the shape. A creation, then a purpose, then a placing, then a plural: in that are signs, not a sign. One commentator notes the plural. This is not one marvel but many folded together, and they open only to thought. The ayah is built like a house: foundation, purpose, furnishing, and a window at the end, facing outward.

An old saying recorded in two commentaries sharpens the point. Affection and mercy are from Allah, it says; and the aversion that creeps between spouses is from Shaytan. The commentators report it as a saying, not as a hadith. It still names the source honestly. The warmth in that anniversary hall was not manufactured by technique.

Here the ego is gently corrected, from two sides. The proud couple who think they built their love need to hear "He placed". So do those who think they ruined it beyond repair. The good habits are real, and they matter. They are how a gift is kept, not how it is made.

Does Allah, then, need us to admire His handiwork? Why point to "His signs" at all? A sign points away from itself. It exists for the one who reads it: li-qawmin yatafakkarūn, for a people who think. Allah loses nothing if the anniversary speech forgets Him. The couple lose the one address where thanks, and help, can actually be sent.
