Al-Ahzab 33:1

“O Prophet, fear Allāh and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.”

Essence

The first command given to the most honoured of creation is to stay mindful of Allah, so no one ever outgrows it.

A reflection

No one graduates from this command

An elderly woman has taught Quran in her front room for forty years. Hundreds of children learned their first surahs at her table. Every Thursday she still takes the bus across town to recite to a younger teacher, who corrects her. Her students find it strange. She finds it obvious.

This ayah opens a whole surah on the same note, and aims it higher than any teacher. Yā ayyuhā al-nabiyy: O Prophet. He is not called by his name, as Adam, Musa and Isa are called by theirs. He is called by his rank, a mark of honour the commentaries dwell on. Then the first command given to the most honoured of creation is ittaqi Allāh: be mindful of Allah.

If anyone could have graduated from that command, it was him. He did not. When some Companions assumed his forgiven status let him do less, he grew angry. He told them that the most mindful of Allah among them, and the one who knew Him best, was himself (Sahih al-Bukhari). One commentary calls taqwa a door whose far end is never reached.

That should quietly unsettle the ego. Most of us carry a private sense of having arrived. We have prayed for years and know the basics. Reminders are for beginners, and sermons are for other people. The opening of Al-Ahzab removes that seat from under us. No rank in creation sits above the reminder.

The ayah then closes on why: inna Allāha kāna ʿalīman ḥakīmā. He is Knowing and Wise, and kāna here sets no limit in time. He has always been so. His knowledge reaches things before they exist, as one concise commentary puts it. His wisdom sets every command where it belongs.

So the command is not a monarch fishing for deference. Allah needs nothing from anyone's mindfulness, not even the Prophet's. It is the One who sees the whole board telling the best of His servants where to stand. The honour and the command arrive in the same breath. To be addressed by Him at all is the dignity. To be told to stay mindful is the care.
