Sad 38:65

قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ مُنذِرٌ ۖ وَمَا مِنْ إِلَـٰهٍ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ ٱلْوَٰحِدُ ٱلْقَهَّارُ

“Say, [O Muḥammad], "I am only a warner, and there is not any deity except Allāh, the One, the Prevailing,[1332]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The best of creation calls himself 'only a warner', so that nothing stays standing as a god except the One who overpowers all.

A reflection

Only a warner, and only One God

Listen to how the sentence is built. The Prophet ﷺ is told to say two things about two persons. About himself: innamā anā mundhir, I am only a warner. About Allah: there is no god at all except Him, the One, the All-Overpowering.

The man is narrowed. The Lord is widened until nothing else is left standing.

That is the opposite of how we introduce ourselves. At a school open evening, a father shakes the teacher's hand and gives his job title before he gives his son's name. We lead with the largest version of ourselves. The most honoured human being who ever lived was told to lead with the smallest true one: only.

Then the second half clears the room. Wa-mā min ilāhin: the small word min is added for emphasis, so the sense is 'there is no god, not a single one'. Every rival is removed before the Name is spoken. Then come two names that belong together. In the Quran, al-Qahhār never appears without al-Wāḥid beside it, six times out of six.

The lexicons give qahr a physical picture. Meat was said to be quhira when the fire took hold of it and its juices ran. It is a force from above that the thing beneath cannot resist, working on it until it yields. One concise commentary adds that everything is subject to Him. Another says He has subdued everything and overcome it.

Set that beside your own pride. The plans you were sure of, the body you trusted, the reputation you polished: each one yields in the end, like everything else. The ego hates the word 'only'. Yet a man who could have claimed more than anyone accepted it gladly. He had seen what stands at the other end of the sentence.

So the ayah offers a trade, and it is a humbling one. Say 'only' about yourself, and you lose nothing real. You simply stop competing with the One whom nothing resists.
