Sad 38:79

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

“He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Cursed and expelled, he still called Allah 'my Lord', and asked not for forgiveness but for time, until the Day humanity is raised.

A reflection

He knew his Lord, and still refused Him

A professor of classical Arabic can parse every word of al-Fātiḥa. He knows each verb form and every case ending, and lectures on its rhetoric to packed rooms. He has never once said it in prayer.

Iblīs speaks here just after being cursed, and his first word is rabbi: my Lord. He is not an atheist. He knows who created him; he said so a moment ago (38:76). He has heard Allah's voice directly. He knows the angels, the Garden and the command. He even knows about the Day of Resurrection. One commentator suggests he had heard of it among the angels, or reasoned his way to it.

Few sceptics have had a fraction of that information. Yet he is the Quran's first portrait of disbelief (38:74).

That overturns a common assumption: that unbelief is mainly a shortage of evidence. Give people enough proof, the thought goes, and they will submit. Iblīs had more proof than any human being will ever hold. What he lacked was not knowledge but willingness to bow. His problem was never the head. It was the knee.

The sceptic's instinct is fair in one sense. Faith should be reasonable, and the Quran argues, reasons and invites reflection constantly. But reasoning can carry a person to the door. It cannot walk him through it. That last step is surrender, and surrender is a choice.

What remains open is how knowledge and pride interact in any particular heart; only Allah sees that. But the ayah warns believers too. It is possible to say 'my Lord' and mean only 'the One I know about'. Knowing about Allah is not the same as belonging to Him.

So measure faith not only by what you know, but by what you obey. The professor could change that tonight, with the words he has studied all his life. He would only need to say them standing, and then go down.
