Ghafir 40:10
“Indeed, those who disbelieve will be addressed, "The hatred of Allāh for you was [even] greater than your hatred of yourselves [this Day in Hell] when you were invited to faith, but you disbelieved [i.e., refused]."”
Saheeh International
Essence
In the Fire they finally loathe themselves, and are told: Allah's loathing was greater, each time you were invited to believe and refused.
A reflection
The moment they turned on themselves
The ayah catches a moment after it has already happened. They have come to loathe themselves. When, exactly?
The commentaries preserve several answers. One says it is when they are handed their records and see their own deeds. Another says it is when they realise they belong to the Fire. A third, reported from an early scholar, tells a longer story.
In that account, the people of the Fire first try patience. Perhaps endurance will help us, they say, as it helped the obedient. They endure, and it does not help. Then they despair. Then Satan stands and addresses them, in words the Quran itself records. Allah promised you the promise of truth; I promised you and broke it. I had no authority over you, except that I called you and you answered me. So do not blame me; blame yourselves (14:22).
At that, the report says, they loathed themselves. And then they were called with this ayah.
One early scholar adds a physical detail: they will bite their own fingertips in their loathing.
The story is a report, and nothing rests on its sequence. But it captures the shape. Every excuse is stripped away until only the self remains to blame.
Picture a driver after a crash. For months he blames the rain, the other car, the badly lit junction. Then the insurer sends him his own dashcam footage. In the seconds before impact, his eyes are on his phone.
That is the sound of this ayah. Not anger at someone else. The terrible discovery that the door was open, and you walked through it yourself.
