Al-Qiyamah 75:2

وَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلنَّفْسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ

“And I swear by the reproaching soul[1800] [to the certainty of resurrection].”

Saheeh International

Essence

After the Day, Allah swears by the voice inside you that keeps asking what you meant: a small court that sits before the great one.

A reflection

Sworn by the one thing you cannot hold still

Try logging your mood every hour for a single day. One woman did, on an app a friend recommended. Grateful at nine. Jealous at ten, over a colleague's news. Tender at eleven, on the phone to her father. Irritable at noon. Sorry by one. By evening she had been six different people, and she had not left her desk.

One classical reading of al-lawwāmah starts exactly there. It links the word to talawwum, hesitating and wavering. On this reading the soul is named for never settling in one state. It remembers and forgets, turns away and turns back, loves and resents, rejoices and grieves, obeys and slips. It does all this many times in an hour, let alone a year. The writer who records this view calls the restless self 'one of the greatest signs of Allah'. He prefers the plainer root, blame, but he keeps the picture.

And Allah swears by it. Straight after swearing by the Day of Standing, He swears by the thing inside you that will not stand still.

That is humbling. We like to describe ourselves as consistent, self-made, in control. Our pride rests on a self we cannot keep level for one afternoon. The One who made it, and turns it, is the One who swears by it. The Prophet ﷺ knew this better than anyone. His wife Umm Salama reported his most frequent supplication. 'O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm on Your religion' (al-Tirmidhi, who graded it ḥasan).

Why would a Lord who needs nothing care whether a human soul reproaches itself? Not for His own sake. The same classical writer explains that the blaming soul shows how badly it needs guidance. It needs someone to show it good from evil, so it can escape the blame and the thing it blames itself for. The oath does not flatter Him. It points at your need.

The ego says: I know exactly who I am. The ayah answers: you change by the hour, and there is One who does not.
