Ghafir 40:12

“[They will be told], "That is because, when Allāh was called upon alone, you disbelieved; but if others were associated with Him, you believed. So the judgement is with Allāh, the Most High, the Grand."”

Essence

Allah alone made them uneasy; partners beside Him put them at ease, so the verdict now belongs to the Most High, the Most Great.

A reflection

Most High, Most Great, and everything else shrinks

The ayah ends on two names. Al-ʿAliyy, the Most High. Al-Kabīr, the Most Great.

The root of ʿaliyy is height, and one lexicon says nothing in it strays from that. Al-ʿalyāʾ is the summit of a mountain. The everyday word taʿāla, come, first meant come up to me. One commentary explains al-ʿAliyy here as the One above everything. Another adds that al-Kabīr is the One beneath whom everything is made small on that Day.

That phrase is the key. On that Day, everything is small. The gods they multiplied. The patrons they flattered. The networks they built. All of it shrinks to its real size before the One.

Human pride has a favourite strategy, and it is not always arrogance in the obvious sense. It is the strategy of the crowd. Gather enough supporters, enough connections, enough backers, and you will be safe. A man at a networking evening works the room for three hours. He leaves with forty business cards and the warm sense that he now matters.

The people in this ayah did something similar on a cosmic scale. They were uneasy with One God, and comforted by many. A crowd of deities felt like more protection than a single Lord.

The ayah's verdict is quiet and final. The judgement belongs to Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. Not to the crowd. Not to any of its members.

The ego that builds itself on being well connected meets its end in these names. Only One is high. Only One is great. Whoever is backed by Him needs no crowd, and whoever is not has nothing the crowd can supply.
