Ghafir 40:50

“They will say, "Did there not come to you your messengers with clear proofs?" They will say, "Yes." They will reply, "Then supplicate [yourselves], but the supplication of the disbelievers is not except in error [i.e., futility]."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The keepers ask one question, did the messengers not come with clear proofs, and the people of the Fire can only answer yes.

A reflection

Does Allah ignore a non-Muslim's prayer?

The last sentence of this ayah is often quoted on its own. The prayer of the disbelievers is only lost. Some use it to claim that Allah never answers anyone outside Islam, in this world or the next.

The context says something narrower. The sentence comes at the end of a conversation inside the Fire, between its keepers and its people. One later commentary addresses the wider claim directly. The truth, it says, is that this ayah is about the prayer of disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection. In this world, a disbeliever may well receive what he asks Allah for, as many ayat bear witness. Whether that is called an answer or not, it adds, is a debate with no benefit.

The Quran itself shows such scenes. People caught at sea call on Allah sincerely, and He brings them safely to land. Then they return to associating partners with Him (29:65). He heard them. They were saved. The failure was what they did next.

The commentaries also note a question of who is speaking. Most read the sentence as the keepers' words. Some read it as Allah's own comment to His Messenger. Either way, it describes a particular place and time: the Fire, after judgement.

A woman who has never prayed in her life sits beside her son's hospital bed and says, to nobody she can name: please. Her Muslim neighbour hears about it later. The neighbour does not tell her that prayer did not count. She tells her that the One she called on is closer than she thinks.

Misreading this ayah does real harm. It can make believers proud and others hopeless. Read in place, it does the opposite. It shows that the door of asking is open to every human being now, and is closed only after the season for it has ended.
