Muhammad 47:31
“And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allāh] and the patient, and We will test your affairs.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Trials come to make plain who truly strives and who holds steady, and to test whether what people say about themselves is true.
A reflection
"Until We know": does He not already know?
"We will surely test you until We know those of you who strive". A careful reader stops at "until We know". Allah knows everything already. Why would He need a test to find out?
The commentators addressed this directly. One early authority said it means: until We distinguish. Another said: until We see. A classical commentator explains the core idea. This is the knowledge on which reward and punishment fall. Allah does not reward people for what He knew they would do. He rewards them for what they actually did. So it is "knowledge of witnessing": the deed made real in the world, where it can be seen and recompensed.
Another commentator puts it the same way. Allah already knew this in the realm of the unseen. The test brings it into the realm of the seen.
Picture a senior surgeon supervising a trainee. From months of simulator sessions, he is certain she is ready to perform the operation herself. Yet she is signed off only after she actually performs it, on a real patient, under his eye. Only then does her logbook carry the procedure. The surgeon's knowledge did not change. Her record did.
That is the shape of the answer. The test is not for Allah's information. It is for the record of what each person truly did, so that the reward is just and the evidence is plain.
What remains open is how Allah's eternal knowledge and human choice meet. The commentators did not claim to dissolve that mystery. They simply insisted on both: He knows, and we are tested.
