Qaf 50:21

وَجَآءَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّعَهَا سَآئِقٌ وَشَهِيدٌ

“And every soul will come, with it a driver and a witness.[1530]”

Saheeh International

Essence

No one arrives on that Day in a crowd: each soul comes alone, with one who drives it and one who testifies.

A reflection

Each soul, one at a time

A family of six reaches the passport desk after a long flight. The children are tired and the parents just want to get through. The officer takes each passport in turn. He looks up at each face, the father, the mother, the teenager, even the sleeping baby. Six people arrived together. Six people are checked alone.

The ayah does not say 'all the people came'. It says kullu nafsin: every single soul. The grammar singles out each one. Then it adds maʿahā, with it, in the singular. The driver and the witness are not assigned to a crowd. Each soul has its own.

The Quran says the same thing elsewhere in stark terms. 'Every one of them will come to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone' (19:95). No family unit, no tribe, no team.

Sahih al-Bukhari records the Prophet ﷺ saying that people will be gathered barefoot, unclothed and uncircumcised. ʿĀʾisha asked: men and women, looking at one another? He replied that the matter would be too grave for that to concern them. Each person will be wholly taken up with himself.

This cuts through a comfortable habit of thought. We often measure ourselves by our group. I am from a good family. I go to a good mosque. My friends are decent people. On that Day none of that is a passport. The officer looks at your face.

It also lifts a weight. You will not be judged for your father's choices, your community's failures or your country's history. Each soul answers for its own. That is both a warning and a relief.

So try a small exercise. When you next assess your standing with Allah, leave out every 'we'. Ask only: what have I, alone, sent ahead?
