Qaf 50:43
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَإِلَيْنَا ٱلْمَصِيرُ
“Indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and to Us is the destination”
Saheeh International
Essence
Life given and life taken come from one source, and every road, however winding, ends at the same address: to Us.
A reflection
Two pronouns, and the clerk who only writes
The ayah opens with two pronouns stacked together: innā naḥnu, 'indeed We, We'. One classical commentator explains the doubling. It is placed first to make His greatness known, he says. It is like a famous man saying simply, 'I am I.' Another commentator adds what the emphasis excludes. In this world no one shares with Him in giving life or causing death.
We forget this easily. Our language is full of small claims. We speak of saving a life, making a living, taking a life into our hands. Doctors fight for patients, and sometimes the patient lives. The ego quietly takes the credit.
Picture a registrar of births and deaths in a town hall office. At ten past nine she records a baby girl, eight pounds, born in the night. At twenty to ten she records an old man who died in his sleep. She is the most official person in town on matters of life and death. And she decides neither. She writes down what was given and what was taken.
That is the truest picture of every human role here. The surgeon, the midwife, the paramedic: each serves at the edge of something they do not own. The ayah shrinks our pride to its real size. We are the clerks, not the Giver. That is not an insult to our work. It is the truth that keeps a good doctor humble and a grieving family from blaming the wrong person.
A sceptic might ask why Allah needs to announce this so emphatically. Is it a need for recognition? He has no need (35:15). The emphasis is for us. A Lord who hid that He gives life would leave us thanking the wrong hands.
