Ar-Rahman 55:44

يَطُوفُونَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ حَمِيمٍ ءَانٍ

“They will circulate between it and scalding water, heated [to the utmost degree].”

Saheeh International

Essence

They go round between the fire and water boiled to its limit: the pilgrims' verb of circling, with no centre and no end.

A reflection

Not a pit to lie still in: a circuit with no exit

Most people picture Hell as a place you are thrown into and then stay. A pit, a furnace, a fixed location. The punishment is imagined as a kind of terrible stillness.

This ayah describes movement. Yaṭūfūna: they go round. Between the Fire and a scalding water, boiled to its limit. Back and forth, round and round. One early authority puts it simply: once to the scalding water, once to the blaze.

A classical commentary draws the motion out, linking it to two other ayat. If they cry for relief, they are relieved with water like molten metal that scalds the faces (18:29). Whenever they want to get out of it, they are returned to it (32:20).

Then it gives a picture any desert traveller would recognise. They come out of the fire, desperate for relief, and see something liquid in the distance. They take it for water and rush to it as the thirsty rush. They drink as thirsty camels drink, without tasting. It is hotter than what they fled. It is like a man dying of thirst who reaches salt water and gulps it without testing it. It burns him and does nothing for his thirst.

So the torment is not only the heat. It is the cycle. Every escape leads to the other torment, and every relief turns out to be part of the punishment.

That changes how the ayah sits in the mind. It is not a static scene to be imagined once. It is a loop, and its horror is that it never resolves.

And it describes something many people know in miniature already. The relief that makes things worse, sought again because it is the only relief they know.

Which is why the next refrain, after this ayah, comes as a question with an exit in it. There is still time to step out of the loop.
