Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 127 of 165
Al-An'am 6:127
۞ لَهُمْ دَارُ ٱلسَّلَـٰمِ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ ۖ وَهُوَ وَلِيُّهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
“For them will be the Home of Peace [i.e., Paradise] with their Lord. And He will be their protecting friend because of what they used to do.”
Saheeh International
Essence
At the end of the straight road is a home named after peace, kept with their Lord; on the way, He is their guardian.
A reflection
A house named after its Owner, not its residents
We like our houses to carry our names. A slate plaque by the door of a new-build, engraved with the family surname. A name carved over a gate, 'built for the grandchildren'. It is a small, human pride: wanting the place to say who lives here and what they managed.
This ayah names the final home differently. Dār al-salām: the home of al-Salām. Most commentators say al-Salām here is Allah Himself, one of His names, and the home is honoured by being joined to Him. Then the ayah adds ʿinda rabbihim: with their Lord, in His keeping.
The residents' names are not on the door. That is a quiet correction to the ego. Nobody in that home will point at the walls and say, this is mine by my own effort. Even the deeds that led there, which the ayah does honour, were walked along a road He laid and called straight (6:126).
Does Allah need His name on the house? He is free of all need (35:15). The naming is for the guests. A home named after al-Salām, the One free of every flaw, is safe because of whose it is. A plaque on our door protects nothing; one hard winter and it cracks. His name on that home is the guarantee that nothing there will ever be taken away.
One commentary gives ʿinda rabbihim a homely picture. It is like saying, 'he has a right with me that will not be forgotten'. The reward sits in His keeping, a trust held by the most reliable Keeper there is.
So the pride that wants its name over the door can rest. The best home was never going to carry your name. It carries His, and that is exactly why you will be safe in it.
