Al-An'am 6:131

ذَٰلِكَ أَن لَّمْ يَكُن رَّبُّكَ مُهْلِكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ بِظُلْمٍ وَأَهْلُهَا غَـٰفِلُونَ

“That is because your Lord would not destroy the cities for wrongdoing[345] while their people were unaware.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Messengers came first because your Lord does not destroy a town for its wrongdoing while its people have never been warned.

A reflection

Power that knocks before it enters

A hotel night manager carries a master key card to three hundred rooms. He could open any door at any hour. He never does. He knocks, announces himself, waits, knocks again, and only enters once he has been heard or the danger is real. The guests barely notice. The restraint is invisible because it is constant.

The ayah says your Lord would not destroy towns for wrongdoing while their people were unaware. Consider who is speaking. The One who raised every city, and could end any of them in a moment, has bound Himself to a way. He will not take a town by surprise. He sends warners first.

The grammar is firm. Lam yakun rabbuka muhlika: your Lord was not one to destroy. It describes not a single decision but a settled way. Theologians framed it differently. One commentary says that, on its own school's view, this rests on pure grace from Allah, not on anything owed. Another school spoke of it as what justice requires. All agree on what He does.

This is where our pride is shamed. Most of us hold a tiny fraction of power. A key, a password, a staff rota, a child's pocket money. How often do we use it without warning? We cut someone off, or punish a mistake that was never explained, or walk in uninvited because we can. The Owner of everything knocks first. What excuse is left for our arrogance?

Is this ayah Allah defending His reputation, as if anxious to look fair? No. He needs no verdict from us on His justice. The ayah is spoken to the Prophet ﷺ, 'your Lord', and through him to every listener, as reassurance. Nobody will be caught out. Nobody's ruin will come before the warning reached them. That is not a ruler seeking praise. It is a Lord making His servants safe enough to listen.
