Al-Jumu'ah · Madani · ayah 8 of 11
Al-Jumu'ah 62:8
“Say, "Indeed, the death from which you flee - indeed, it will meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you about what you used to do."”

Essence
Every road taken to escape death leads towards it, and beyond it waits the One who knows both your hidden and your public life.
A reflection
Three towers and one plain shroud
A property developer who named three towers after himself is buried in a plain white shroud. He is laid in the same row as the caretaker of one of his buildings. The cloth is the same length. The graves are the same depth.
An early commentator, reciting this ayah, said that Allah humbled the son of Adam with death. Every claim the ego builds, death quietly takes down. The towers keep his name for a while. He does not keep the towers.
The ayah then names where he goes: ʿālim al-ghayb wa-al-shahāda, the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. One commentary glosses it as the secret and the public. Another sharpens it for the people first addressed. He knows what you showed others, and what you hid from them.
The lexicons give ghayb a gentle picture: the sun after it has set. It is still there, still shining, only hidden from your eyes. Nothing in a person's hidden life is gone because no one can see it. It has only set.
Here the pride of a lifetime shrinks twice. First, death strips the public self: the titles, buildings and followers. Then the One we return to already knows the private self as well as the public one. There is nothing left to manage.
Does Allah need to say He knows the hidden? Is it surveillance, a camera on the ceiling? His knowledge is not a guard's. It is the knowledge of a Lord and a Judge. The knowledge that sees what we concealed also sees what no one else noticed. It sees the kindness done in secret, the temptation quietly refused, the grief carried without complaint.
The developer's name is still on the towers. Whatever he hid, and whatever good he did unseen, is known now to the One who knew it all along.
