Al-Jumu'ah · Madani · ayah 7 of 11
Al-Jumu'ah 62:7
“But they will not wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have put forth. And Allāh is Knowing of the wrongdoers.”
Saheeh International
Essence
People do not dread meeting someone they have prepared for; the dread comes from what their own hands sent ahead, and Allah knows every item.
A reflection
The One who was in the room
At a family wedding, a woman tells her version of an old falling-out to anyone who will listen. It has improved with each telling. Her aunt, who was in the kitchen that night, says nothing and keeps pouring the tea.
The ayah ends wa-Allāhu ʿalīmun bi-al-ẓālimīn: and Allah knows well the wrongdoers. One commentary adds simply that nothing of their wrong is hidden from Him. Another reads it as knowledge of whoever wronged his own soul and ruined it.
Much of the ego's work is editing. We tell the story of our lives in the best lighting. We remember our intentions and forget our effects. We explain the bad weeks and frame the good ones. Over the years, the edited version becomes the one we believe, and our pride settles into it.
The fear of death, this ayah suggests, is partly the fear of meeting the One who was in the room. He did not hear the edited version. He saw the original. That is why the people addressed would not wish for the meeting. It was not that they doubted Him. It was that they did not.
Does Allah need to tell us He knows? Is it a threat? Read it the other way round. Where no one knows the truth, the loudest version wins. The neighbour with the better lawyer wins, and so does the colleague with the slicker account. That Allah knows is the guarantee that no one will be judged on a rumour, including you.
So the name is humbling and steadying at once. It strips the ego of its edits. And it promises that your hidden good is known too: the help no one saw, the restraint no one credited.
The aunt at the wedding does not correct anyone. She does not need to. Neither, in the end, does He.
