“And the sun and the moon are joined,”

Essence
The two lights that were never allowed to meet are brought together, and the sun, named for never standing still, is finally made to stop.
A reflection
The lights people bowed to, handled like objects
Forty thousand people in a stadium chant one man's name. The announcer calls him a superstar. We borrow the language of the sky for anyone who shines: stars, icons, legends. The ego loves to be called a light.
Now look at the real lights. For most of human history, the sun and the moon were the greatest things anyone could see. Whole peoples bowed to them. The Quran had to say it plainly: 'Do not prostrate to the sun, nor to the moon. Prostrate to Allah who created them' (41:37). Ibrāhīm watched the moon rise and set, then the sun, and said: I do not love things that set (6:76–78).
In this ayah, both are simply moved. Wa-jumiʿa: and they are brought together. The verb is passive. It does not name who brings them, because there is no one else it could be. The two lights people worshipped are handled like objects on a table.
One classical commentator records a view that they may even be gathered into the Fire. Not to punish them, for they are only matter, but to shame those who worshipped them. A modern translation's note says the same: so that everyone knows they were created servants, especially those who bowed to them. Sahih al-Bukhari has the Prophet ﷺ say simply: the sun and the moon will be rolled up on the Day of Resurrection.
Someone may ask whether this is a display of power for its own sake. Does Allah need to show that He outranks the sun? He needs nothing; He is free of all need (35:15). The display is not for Him. It is for every person who ever mistook a servant for a master, so that on that Day no one is left confused.
There is freedom in that for us now. Whatever you are tempted to bow to, a person, a career, the applause of a stadium, it is less than the sun. And the sun is going to be rolled up.
