Al-Qiyamah 75:1

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

“I swear by the Day of Resurrection”

Saheeh International

Essence

The surah swears by a Day nobody has yet seen, and names that Day not the End but the Standing.

A reflection

Sworn by a day that has not yet come

Open a weather app and scroll to the tenth day. The little suns and clouds are still there, but everyone knows they are guesses. Past a week or so, our knowledge of tomorrow thins to almost nothing.

Now listen to how this surah begins. Allah swears by a day. Not by the sun overhead, or a city the hearers could walk through, but by a Day none of them had seen. He swears by it the way a man swears by something he is holding in his hand.

Only the One who already owns the future can do that. Māliki yawmi al-dīn, Master of the Day of Judgement, is said in every unit of prayer (1:4). People swear to borrow weight from something bigger than themselves. Here the oath is sworn by something only He can see, and it already belongs to Him.

Set that beside the way we talk about our own plans. Next year we will move. By forty the house will be paid off. The Quran gently corrects even that: never say of anything, 'I will do it tomorrow', without 'if Allah wills' (18:23–24). We cannot vouch for next Tuesday. He swears by the last Day of all. The ego likes to think it is the author of its own calendar. This ayah shows whose calendar it is.

Does He need to swear, then? Does He need us convinced? One classical reading turns the question round. He swears because human souls need to know these things and hold on to them, not because He gains anything.

Three times He even tells His Prophet ﷺ to swear the same truth for his hearers. 'Yes, by my Lord, it is true' (10:53). 'Yes, by my Lord, it will come to you' (34:3). 'Yes, by my Lord, you will be raised' (64:7). A parent who repeats an important warning twice is not unsure of it. The child is the one who needs it twice.

There is rest in this for the proud heart. We are not the ones holding the future up. The Day is in His hand already, and so are we.
