Al-Qiyamah 75:8
وَخَسَفَ ٱلْقَمَرُ
“And the moon darkens”
Saheeh International
Essence
Every eclipse anyone has ever watched has cleared; this one, the commentators say, does not.
A reflection
He rose in alarm, fearing it was the Hour
One day in Madinah the sun began to go dark. Sahih al-Bukhari records what the Prophet ﷺ did. He got up in alarm, afraid that it was the Hour. He went to the mosque and prayed. The Companion who reports it says he had never seen him stand, bow and prostrate for so long.
Think about what that tells us. He had recited ayat like this one for years: the moon eclipsed, the sun and moon joined. When the sky actually began to darken, he did not reach for an explanation. He reached for the possibility that this was it.
Then he taught the people what to do. These signs that Allah sends, he said, do not happen for anyone's death or life. Allah uses them to put fear into His servants. When you see any of it, rush in alarm to His remembrance, His supplication and seeking His forgiveness.
Another narration in Sahih al-Bukhari adds a detail worth holding on to. He prayed two long units, standing and bowing twice in each. When he finished and turned to the people, the sun had cleared.
That is the held picture of this ayah. In this world, an eclipse clears. The Prophet ﷺ prayed through one and came out of the prayer into sunlight. One classical commentator draws exactly this contrast for the moon of this ayah. The eclipse in this world ends in clearing, he writes. In the next, its light does not come back.
So every eclipse we are given now is a rehearsal with a happy ending. The light goes, people are frightened, they pray, and the light returns. The ayah describes the one time it will not.
When the next eclipse comes, do what he did. Stop. Pray. Ask forgiveness. While eclipses still clear.
