Al-Insan 76:2

“Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture[1811] that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing.”

Essence

From a little mingled water you were made, on purpose, to be tested, and given ears and eyes to sit the test.

A reflection

The last inch in the glass

A man at the head of a meeting table brings his palm down hard. Nobody, he says, tells him how to run his department. Then he reaches for his glass and drinks. An inch of water is left at the bottom.

That inch is the word. A nuṭfa, the lexicons say, is a little clear water: what is left in a waterskin or at the bottom of a bucket. The human fluid is called by the same name, they explain, for how little it is. 'Indeed, We created the human from a nuṭfa'. Everything at that table, the voice, the certainty, the palm on the wood, began as less than what is left in the glass.

The Quran knows what comes next. 'Does the human not see that We created him from a drop, and then he is an open adversary?' (36:77). The drop learns to argue. It argues with people, and then with its Maker.

The ayah opens with innā, 'indeed We'. The plural is the plural of majesty, and the opening is emphatic. It is not an embarrassed admission of where we came from. It is a statement of power: from that, He makes this. The ego wants to forget the first half so it can enjoy the second. The ayah keeps both in one sentence, so you cannot have the speaker without the drop.

Does Allah need us to remember our smallness, so that He can feel great? He does not. 'Whoever strives, strives only for himself; Allah is free of need of all the worlds' (29:6). The reminder changes nothing in Him. It changes the man at the table. Someone who remembers the inch in the glass can still run a department, firmly. But he stops needing everyone to know that nobody tells him anything.

There is gentleness here too. The One who could make a hearing, seeing, arguing person out of a few drops is not stretched by your problems. Pride shrinks, and with it the panic. Both were too big for something made from so little, in hands so able.
