Al-Insan 76:3
إِنَّا هَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا
“Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.”

Essence
You were shown the road, not dragged down it; every morning the same person can walk it grateful, or cover the gift and turn away.
A reflection
Not two teams: a choice at every clocking-in
At five to six, a queue forms at the clocking-in machine of a distribution warehouse. Forty people, forty cards, the same beep forty times. Every one of them is selling the next ten hours of their life.
The Prophet ﷺ used that very picture. Every person goes out in the morning and sells himself, he said: he either frees it or ruins it (Sahih Muslim). One major commentary sets that hadith right here, beside 'whether grateful or ungrateful'.
Most of us carry a quieter reading of this ayah. Humanity is split into two teams, the grateful and the ungrateful. The teams were picked long ago, and we are fairly sure which one we are on. The ayah becomes a scoreboard, not a mirror.
The grammar resists that. The two words, shākiran and kafūran, describe states of the one who was guided. One classical reading says the guidance stands in both states. Whether he is grateful or ungrateful, the way has been shown to him. Another reads the words as dividing people into two kinds. Either way, they describe how a person stands, and people stand differently on different mornings.
So the real question is not which team I am on. It is which way I walked today. The same warehouse worker can hand in a lost wallet on Monday and pocket a stray note on Thursday. The same believer can thank Allah through a hard illness and grumble through an easy week.
That is sobering, because no past morning secures this one. It is also hopeful, because no past morning condemns this one either. The card can be stamped differently tomorrow.
The ayah does not hide the stakes. The next ayah names what waits for those who cover the gift (76:4), and the ones after describe the reward of the grateful. But the line between them runs through every day, not between two tribes. Every morning the road is shown again, and every morning you sell your hours to something.
