Al-Insan 76:6

عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا عِبَادُ ٱللَّهِ يُفَجِّرُونَهَا تَفْجِيرًا

“A spring of which the [righteous] servants of Allāh will drink; they will make it gush forth in force [and abundance].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah's servants drink their fill from a spring that runs wherever they lead it: not idleness, but ease that answers to you.

A reflection

Not lying about: leading the water

Ask people to describe Paradise and a quiet assumption usually surfaces. It is a place where things are done for you. You recline; everything arrives. Some find that restful. Others, privately, find it a little dull: an eternity with nothing to do.

This ayah gives the people of the Garden a verb. Yufajjirūnahā tafjīrā: they make the spring burst forth, a full, free bursting. The early commentators agree on what it means. They lead it wherever they wish, from their homes and their halls. One says they direct it where they please. Another says its water is obedient to them. A classical commentary adds: easily, without the water ever refusing them.

Watch a small boy on a beach with a plastic spade. He digs a groove from the waterline to the moat round his sandcastle. A wave runs up, finds the groove, and races along it into the moat. He shrieks with delight, then digs another channel. He has not made the sea. But it is following the path he cut, and that is the whole joy.

That is closer to the Garden in this ayah than the picture of lying still. The joy is not only receiving. It is directing, shaping, choosing where the good goes next, with nothing resisting you. Here, every good thing we try to lead somewhere meets friction: the budget, the weather, other people, our own tiredness. There, the spring runs where it is led.

The commentators read the verb as ease, not toil. No one digs a channel or carries a bucket. But the ease has a direction, and the direction is theirs. That is a kind of honour. The ones who spent their lives steering their own desires towards Allah are given a spring that steers as they wish.

So if the Garden has ever sounded boring to you, read this ayah again. It promises more than rest. It promises that what you love will finally move the way you mean it to.
