Al-Insan 76:5
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ يَشْرَبُونَ مِن كَأْسٍ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُورًا
“Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of Kāfūr,[1812]”
Saheeh International
Essence
The righteous are handed a cup that is never empty, scented with camphor: named in your words, so your heart can find its way.
A reflection
Named with what you know
Many readers meet this ayah with a picture already in place. Paradise is this world's luxuries, enlarged: the best drink, the finest cup, the comforts we wanted here, at last allowed. Some find that beautiful. Others, more sceptical, find it a little earthly. Both are reading the words as a catalogue.
The ayah itself sets a snag for that reading. The cup's mixture is kāfūr, camphor. Camphor is cooling and fragrant, and nobody drinks it. One classical commentary raises the objection openly: camphor mixed into a drink would not taste pleasant, so why name it? The answers vary. Some early readers took Kāfūr as the name of a spring in the Garden, with camphor's whiteness, scent and coolness but not its taste. Others said the drink is like camphor, in colour, fragrance and chill. Another said Allah can make a camphor without harm, as He removes harm from every food there.
One early voice puts the whole matter in a sentence. It is not the camphor of this world. Allah named what is with Him by what is with you, so that hearts could find their way to it.
On a video call, a girl in Leeds tries to explain snow to her grandmother, in a village that has never seen it. It's like the ice in your freezer, she says, but soft. It falls from the sky and covers the street. The grandmother nods. She has understood something true, and nothing complete.
That is how the Garden's words work. They are true, and they point. But they are not the thing itself. In a hadith qudsi, Allah speaks of what He has prepared for His righteous servants. No eye has seen it, no ear has heard it, no human heart has imagined it (Sahih al-Bukhari). The hadith then recites: 'No soul knows what delight of the eyes is hidden for them' (32:17).
So set down the catalogue. The cup, the mixture and the camphor are real, and they are also signposts. The best of what you know is pointing beyond itself, towards what you do not yet have words for.
