At-Takwir 81:11
وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ
“And when the sky is stripped away”
Saheeh International
Essence
The sky, the ceiling every king has lived under, will be peeled away like a hide, and only the true King will remain.
A reflection
'Where are the kings of the earth?'
In a care home on the edge of a market town lives a man in his nineties who was once a senior judge. The nurses say he still straightens his tie every morning before breakfast. For forty years, rooms stood when he entered. Now no one calls him 'my lord', and he sometimes forgets why he ever expected them to.
Every title we hold, we hold under the same sky. Kings, presidents, chief executives and head teachers have all lived beneath one roof they did not build and cannot touch. Samāʾ, sky, comes from a root meaning height: whatever is above you. For every human being who ever lived, the sky was the upper limit of the world.
This ayah peels it off. Kushiṭat is the word the Arabs used for stripping the hide from a slaughtered camel. The ceiling of every life is pulled away as easily as that.
Then comes a scene the Prophet ﷺ described. Sahih al-Bukhari reports that Allah will grasp the earth and fold the heavens in His right hand. Then He will say: 'I am the King. Where are the kings of the earth?' The Quran says the same: 'the heavens will be folded in His right hand' (39:67). No answer comes back.
The ego loves titles because they feel like height. Manager, founder, elder, expert: each one lifts us a little above others, and we come to believe the lift is ours. The question 'Where are the kings?' ends that belief. It is not asked to humiliate anyone. It is asked to state what was always true. There was only ever one King.
Why say it at all, if He needs nothing? Because the person who hears it now is saved from a lifetime of false heights. The old judge will be fine. What would hurt him is dying still believing the tie made him great. The majesty is told to us so that we can put down our crowns before we are asked where they went.
