At-Takwir 81:7
وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ
“And when the souls are paired[1867]”
Saheeh International
Essence
On that Day every soul is joined to its match; the company you love now is quietly choosing the company you will keep then.
A reflection
Your most-called list
Open your phone and look at the people you call most. Not the ones you say matter, the ones you actually ring. Then look at the chats you open first each morning and the accounts you watch late at night. That list is a fairly honest portrait of your company.
Once, from the pulpit, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb asked the people what this ayah meant. They fell silent. So he told them. A person is joined to his like among the people of Paradise, and to his like among the people of the Fire. Then he recited: 'Gather those who did wrong, and their kinds' (37:22). The righteous is paired with the righteous, the corrupt with the corrupt.
So zuwwijat here is not about marriage. It is about company. Every soul is joined to what matches it. The Quran pictures humanity sorting into three groups on that Day. There are those on the right, those on the left, and the foremost who raced ahead (56:7–10). One early authority read this ayah through exactly those groups.
That sounds frightening until you hear the hadith that goes with it. A man asked the Prophet ﷺ when the Hour would come. 'What have you prepared for it?' He admitted it was nothing much. 'Only that I love Allah and His Messenger'. The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'You will be with those you love' (Sahih al-Bukhari). Anas, who narrated it, said nothing made them happier.
This is the mercy inside the pairing. You may not have deeds like the best people. But what you love pulls you towards them. Anas said he loved the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr and ʿUmar. He hoped to be with them for that love, though he had not done what they did.
So look at the list again. Whom do you seek out, admire, copy, miss? The Day will not invent your company. It will reveal the company you had already chosen, and join you to it.
