Al-Infitar 82:11

كِرَامًا كَـٰتِبِينَ

“Noble and recording;”

Saheeh International

Essence

Your record is kept by noble scribes honoured by their Lord: nothing false is added to it, and nothing true slips out.

A reflection

Why write it down if He already knows?

In a cup final, the referee sees the foul clearly and points to the spot. Thousands of fans are screaming that he is wrong. So the replay is shown on the giant screen, from three angles, in slow motion. The referee did not need it. The stadium did.

This objection was raised centuries ago and taken seriously. If Allah knows everything, the writing cannot be for Him. He is far above forgetting, and far above needing reminders. So why appoint scribes at all?

One classical commentator states the objection in full and then answers it. The writing, he says, is not for Allah's benefit, since He gains nothing and loses nothing. Some claimed He records deeds for fear of forgetting, and he rejects that outright. Allah deals with His servants, he explains, in the way they themselves understand justice. Among people, the most convincing account is a written record with witnesses. So on that Day books are laid open, and witnesses stand. They testify as a king's upright witnesses testify against one who defied him: he gave you this and that, and you did this and that.

Another commentator makes the same point more briefly. The recording, he says, is so that the proof is established, and no one can call the verdict arbitrary.

This fits the Quran's own description of the scene. 'Read your book' (17:14). 'What is this book that leaves out nothing, small or great, but has counted it?' (18:49). The shock of the guilty is not that they are judged, but that everything is there, in their own handwriting.

What remains open is the how. What the scribes write with, and on what, the sources leave to Allah. One of them says plainly that the writing is real, and that knowledge of its tools belongs to Him.

The replay is not for the referee. It is so that everyone, including the player who fouled, can see that the decision was just. On that Day, no one will be able to say that the record was invented.
