Al-Infitar 82:12

يَعْلَمُونَ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ

“They know whatever you do.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The keepers know what you do, every deed, small or great; the passing thoughts you fight against are not counted as your deeds.

A reflection

What you do, not what you fear

A woman has cared for her mother, who has dementia, for three years. One night, bathing her at eleven o'clock, exhausted, a thought flashes through her mind: I wish this were over. She is horrified. She lies awake for hours, sure that she has become a monster, and afraid of what has been written.

Many people read this ayah and freeze. They carry thoughts they hate: sudden, ugly and unwanted. An image in the middle of prayer. A flash of cruelty towards someone they love. If the keepers know everything, is all of that being recorded against them?

Look at the words. Yaʿlamūna mā tafʿalūn: they know what you do. One view recorded by a classical commentator says they know what shows from you, not what you say privately to yourselves.

And the Prophet ﷺ was explicit. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report him saying that Allah has overlooked, for his community, what their souls whisper to them. The condition is that they do not act on it or speak it.

Sahih Muslim also records a moment when some Companions came to him in distress. They found thoughts in themselves, they said, that each of them would consider it too grave to speak aloud. He asked whether they really found that. They said yes. He said: that is clear faith.

Read that again, slowly. Hating the thought is the sign of a living heart. A heart that did not care would not be troubled at all. The woman in the bathroom was not a monster. She was a tired servant of Allah, horrified by a whisper she never agreed to.

So if your mind is a noisy place, do not despair of it. Do not treat each passing thought as a verdict on your soul. Turn to Allah, seek refuge in Him from the whisperer, and keep going. Tell Him plainly what frightens you. He already knows, and He is the One who overlooked it.

The record is of what you do. And for the carer, what she did that night was finish the bath, dry her mother's hair and tuck her in.
