وَٱلَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ
“And [by] the night and what it envelops”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah swears by the night and all it gathers in, folds over and carries: every creature, every secret, and every prayer said in the dark.
A reflection
When the yard light goes off
A farmer has spent ten years in a dispute with his neighbour over a strip of land by the stream. Solicitors' letters, a surveyor, a hearing that settled nothing. One night he walks out late and switches off the yard light. The dark comes down over both farms at once. He cannot see where the fence runs. For a moment the whole valley is one.
Wa-l-layli wa-mā wasaq: and by the night and what it gathers. The early explanations give the verb a family of meanings. What it gathers and brings together. What it wraps round. What it covers and hides. What enters into it. One classical commentator pictures its darkness draped over mountains, trees, seas and land. All of them are gathered under it.
Another notes what that means for the oath. If the night gathers everything, then swearing by 'what it gathers' is swearing by the whole of creation. He compares it with another oath: 'I swear by what you see, and what you do not see' (69:38–39).
That is where the ego quietly shrinks. By day we divide the world into mine and yours. My land, my house, my office, my part of town. At night one darkness folds over all of it, the mansion and the bus shelter, the disputed fence and the stream. None of it was ever gathered by us. All of it is gathered by Him.
Why would Allah point this out? He does not need us to admire His night. He is the Free of need (35:15). The Quran names the purpose plainly. Out of His mercy, it says, He made the night and the day. In one you rest; in the other you seek His bounty. Then it adds: 'and perhaps you will be grateful' (28:73). The oath is for our rest and our gratitude, not His glory.
Tonight, if you can, turn off the lights for a minute and look out. Everything you worry about is out there somewhere, gathered under the same dark. Let the night gather your pride too, and fold it away.
