Al-Inshiqaq 84:15
بَلَىٰٓ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرًا
“But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever, of him, Seeing.”
Saheeh International
Essence
One word, 'Yes indeed', overturns a lifetime's 'never', because his Lord had been seeing him, and understanding him, all along.
A reflection
The slideshow and the one who saw it all
On his eighteenth birthday, a young man shows the family a slideshow of his life that he made himself. First football trophy, first holiday abroad, the school prom. Everyone claps. His grandmother claps too, but she is thinking of the parts that are not in it. The nights he had croup. His first word. The prayer whispered in his ear on the day he was born. She saw a life he cannot remember.
Balā: yes indeed. In Arabic this is not a plain 'yes'. It is the particular yes that answers a denial and overturns it. The man said lan, never: I will never return. Allah answers with one word that cancels a lifetime of 'never'.
There is a history in that word. Allah drew Adam's descendants from their loins and asked, 'Am I not your Lord?' They answered: 'Balā, we bear witness' (7:172). Humanity's first word to its Lord was balā. This man spent his life taking it back. Now the same word is spoken to him, from the other side.
Then the reason: inna rabbahu kāna bihi baṣīrā. His Lord was, all along, seeing him. The classical explanations stretch that 'all along' in both directions. From the day He created him until the day He raised him. Even before He created him, knowing that his return would be to Him. With every deed that calls for recompense, so that nothing of it is hidden.
That is what shrinks the ego. We tell our lives like the birthday slideshow, as if we were the authors and the only witnesses. We remember our wins and edit out our weaknesses, and we half believe the edit. But the true record was never ours. Someone saw the whole of it, including what we have forgotten and what we never knew about ourselves.
Does He need us to know this, as if He wanted credit? He needs nothing. 'O people, you are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is the Free of need, the Praised' (35:15). The telling is for us. The Prophet ﷺ described excellence in worship this way. Worship Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He sees you (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). Being seen is not a threat to the humble. It is the ground they stand on.
