وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا
“And return to his people in happiness.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After the easy reckoning comes the homecoming: turning back to your own people with a joy that has nothing left to fear.
A reflection
Who will be waiting at the door?
A long-distance lorry driver has been on the road for two weeks. It is eleven at night when his headlights turn into his street. Upstairs, two small faces are pressed to the bedroom window in their pyjamas. They were supposed to be asleep an hour ago. Nobody had the heart to insist.
Wa-yanqalibu ilā ahlihi masrūrā: and he returns to his people, rejoicing. After the book in the right hand and the easy reckoning, the surah shows a homecoming.
Who are 'his people'? The early explanations give several answers, and together they are generous. One says: the family Allah has prepared for him in Paradise. Another: his spouses there. Another: his own family from this world, if they believed, so that he can tell them he has been saved. And another: the whole company of believers, since every believer is family to every other through shared faith.
The word ahl first meant those who share one dwelling with you. To marry was to take an ahl. The old Arabic greeting ahlan told a guest: you have come to family, not to strangers. So the ayah is not describing a reception in a hall. It is describing being home.
The Quran adds a promise that has comforted many parents. 'Those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith, We will join with them their descendants' (52:21). Families broken by death are gathered again.
And there is a mercy here for those who feel they have no people. The convert whose family no longer calls. The widow who eats alone. The person who never married and fears the empty chair. One of the early readings says the believers themselves are his people. Nobody who comes to that door with a book in the right hand arrives as a stranger.
So think of the faces you hope will be at that window. Pray for them by name. And be, for someone who has no one, the kind of believer who makes them feel they have come home.
